Renovation Project Management

Commercial renovations in Calgary

Renovating a commercial space to keep it fresh, new, and exciting can build your business and is a cost effective alternative to relocating. If you like the space and the location you are already in, but you have a grand vision for what it could be, the renovation project management experts at Aztec Renovations and Refit can help you to make it a reality.

As with any project, a renovation has competing constraints that can affect the quality of the finished product if they aren’t carefully managed. Think of a project as a triangle with Quality at its center. The sides of the triangle represent constraints – Scope, Time, and Cost. If you change one of the constraints, you must also change the other constraints to maintain a quality product.

For example, if the scope of a project changes mid-stream, the cost, or budgeted amount and the time needed to complete the project will also have to change in order to maintain the same level of quality. If one of those constraints can’t be changed, for example, by pushing back the completion date or bringing on extra workers, quality will suffer in the end.

At Aztec Renovations and Refit, we are experts in commercial renovation project management. We thrive in the constantly changing and fluid environment that renovation projects exist in. We know that things can change and priorities shift partway through a project and we adapt, always with our eyes firmly fixed on maintaining quality. Mould Removal Calgary

Mold removal

Mould spores surround us in our homes, our offices and the outdoors – they are everywhere and they are a major component of household dust. All that spores need to grow and thrive is moisture and a source of food. Every house has a certain amount of mould growing in it. While mould spores in any concentration can have adverse effects on human health, when they occur in abnormally high concentrations, they can be very dangerous to the people who inhale them.

Exposure to mould spores can cause allergic reactions, asthma attacks, mycotoxin poisoning, and fungal infections (mycosis). They cause eye, nose, and throat irritation, sinus congestion, and respiratory problems like infections and bronchitis. When spores are inhaled by people with suppressed immune systems, they can begin to grow on living tissue.

The flooding that devastated parts of Calgary and surrounding area during the spring of 2013 created ideal conditions for abnormally active mould growth. Damp basements and crawlspaces, and waterlogged drywall provide perfect growing conditions for mould.

If your property was damaged by flooding or you are concerned that mould is actively growing in your home or workplace, it should be assessed by professionals who are experienced in mould remediation. If a mould problem is identified or if conditions are right for excessive mould growth, action must be taken to prevent an infestation as soon as possible.

Mould contamination is hazardous to your health and can have serious long term consequences. Don’t ignore the problem and hope that it will go away on its own.

Aztec Renovations and Refit are experts in all types of hazardous material removal including mould remediation.  They will clean up your mould problem and remove and replace damaged materials. Perhaps most importantly, they’ll eliminate the conditions such as water seepage, high humidity, or poor ventilation that encouraged mould growth in the first place so that it doesn’t happen again.

If you have questions or concerns about mould removal and prevention, call Aztec Renovations and Refit today.

Asbestos Removal – Should it Stay or Should it Go

Asbestos removal sign

We’re all aware of the dangers of asbestos, but you might be surprised by how much of this potentially deadly substance could be lurking in your home or office building.

Right up until the late 1970’s, asbestos was added to a variety of commonly used building materials to make them more fire resistant. Building materials that contained asbestos included:

  • Paint
  • Insulation
  • Fiberboard
  • Siding
  • Soundproofing tiles
  • Roof shingles
  • Floor tiles

Even though there was a widespread ban on using asbestos in building materials in Canada during the late 1970’s, building materials that were manufactured prior to the ban continued to be used in construction in Canada into the early 1980’s. Asbestos isn’t just a concern in older homes and buildings.

Long term exposure to asbestos has been linked to serious medical conditions like mesothelioma, diffuse pleural thickening, lung cancer, and asbestosis. It’s estimated that between 400 and 500 people die from mesothelioma, the most deadly of the asbestos related illnesses, each year in Canada.

If materials such as paint, flooring, or ceiling tiles that contain asbestos are disturbed during a renovation, they can release tiny asbestos fibers into the air that you, your co-workers, and your family breathe.

If building materials such as pipe insulation that contain asbestos are left undisturbed, they pose little risk. However, they should be contained using special materials installed by hazmat professionals.

If you’re not sure if your home or office building contains asbestos and you are planning a renovation, you should have it tested for asbestos first. Even knocking down a wall to create a larger living space in your home could potentially release asbestos fibers. In fact, testing for the presence of asbestos can release fibers into the air if it’s not done properly.

Aztec Renovations and Refit are experts in the field of asbestos removal and containment. If you are concerned that your home or office contains asbestos or other hazardous materials, breathe easy. Let the professionals at Calgary’s fastest growing hazardous material removal company handle all of your asbestos removal, containment, and inspection needs.
